STORY

I spent seven years at a performance agency, specializing in the trades. I loved it—not just because the results were measurable and immediate, but because the trades felt like home. As a high school dropout, I’ve always carried a chip on my shoulder. Marketing for the trades gave me a way to quantify my worth instantly. The day people clicked, they called, and they paid. It wasn’t just validation—it was proof that my work worked.
But it wasn’t just about the numbers. The people in the trades reminded me of myself: underdogs who didn’t take the traditional academic path, who had everything to prove, and who didn’t care what anyone thought about how they achieved success. These were my people.
For years, I thrived in the agency world. But even as one of the good ones, I couldn’t escape the exhaustion. Contractors distrusted agencies because they’d been burned by the big ones, and they brought that critique to every table. Every strategy, every campaign, every result was second-guessed, compared, and commoditized. It wasn’t about the work—it was about proving you weren’t screwing them.
The worst part? Most contractors didn’t have great in-house marketing talent—if they had any at all—so they couldn’t tell the good agencies from the bad ones. It was exhausting for the good ones and profitable for the bad ones.

That’s when I realized I couldn’t do it anymore. I didn’t want to be part of the system. I didn’t want to waste 90% of my time in meetings defending decisions, fighting for clarity, or proving I wasn’t screwing anyone over. We spent so much energy on the politics of the process that there was no space left to actually do the work. It was exhausting, unfulfilling, and completely unimpactful. No wonder everyone hates agencies.
I knew there had to be another way—one that didn’t involve becoming just another agency or consultant. I didn’t want to play that game anymore. I wanted to be more integrated than that. I didn’t quite know how, but I knew if I lead with my expertise, track record & intent, I could make clients kick ass and figure out how to merchandise that as a service. Thus, we embraced the title that is ironically the nemesis of every agency; fractional CMOs. Unfortunately “Performance Architects” just wasn’t SEO friendly enough, and ya know, we are marketers after all.
But as CMOs, we do exactly that. We spend 90% of our time strategizing high performance, collaborating, and actually making things happen. The meetings are minimal, the work is meaningful, and the results speak for themselves. It’s a complete 180 from the chaos I left behind—and damn, it feels good to do it differently.
